Not an expert by any means...but teams sign players...
that are in the G League or elsewhere (not currently on NBA roster) for a short term contract largely due to injuries to players currently on the roster. It's basically a short term fill-in while they see how the regular, injured player progresses. Or in today's world, they get over COVID or quarantine.
Once the 10 day contract is up or does not need to be extended, the player returns to where they were before. And hopes for another call-up or chance.
